The term "Interchange-based pricing" sounds a lot more intimidating than it actually is once you understand the basics. Interchange-based pricing is gaining in popularity as the preferred merchant account pricing structure; however most card processors will only make it available to the largest merchant accounts.

Why is that? It's completely transparent!

Interchange represents the true cost of processing the transaction based upon;

• The type of card used (Credit vs. Debit, Reward vs. Standard, etc.,

• The way the card is processed (web, face-to-face, keyed into a terminal, etc.), and

• The type of business (Hotel, Restaurant, etc.).

A merchant using Interchange-based pricing sees the actual interchange (wholesale) rate for every transaction, so they know both the wholesale processing cost, and the revenue being charged by the processor for managing the account.

While Interchange-based pricing is frequently the least expensive type of merchant account pricing, it's also the hardest to get a processor to offer. Merchant-Account.com will offer either Interchange-based pricing or Tiered pricing regardless of the volume processed. Many providers are still offering only tiered pricing, and only offering interchange-based pricing to established merchants that can prove a certain processing volume.
